What does West Coast Hair Design specialize in?
West Coast Hair Design is a color salon in Mandarin, Jacksonville, open since 1995. We specialize in balayage, lived-in color, foil highlights, blonde, dimensional brunettes, reds, modern gray coverage, and gray blending.
Education is a big part of what we do. Our stylists train constantly in color, cutting, and the techniques they specialize in, and every color is built around your hair, how much maintenance you want, and what you want to see in the mirror. The goal is simple: you still look good at week six.
What is balayage?
Balayage is a French word meaning “to sweep.” It is a hand-painted highlighting technique, so we place brightness exactly where your hair needs it instead of following a set foil pattern. The result is hand-painted balayage that looks like salt water and sun gave it to you, whether you’re blonde, brunette, or redhead.
Our West Coast Signature Balayage combines hand painting with other techniques when your hair calls for it. Most guests come back two to three times a year, depending on how bright you like to stay and how much of your natural color you want to see between visits.
How long does a balayage appointment take?
A full balayage appointment typically takes two to three hours. Your length, thickness, and starting color all play a part, and we’ll give you a more exact estimate during your consultation so you can plan your day.
What is lived-in color?
Lived-in color is dimensional color designed to grow out without a hard line. It names the result, not one technique. We get there with hand-painted balayage, foils, or a combination, depending on your starting color and how much lift or precision you want. Darker hair often calls for foils.
Some guests want soft brightness that melts into their natural color. Others want stronger contrast. Either way, most lived-in color guests come in two to three times a year.
Do you offer gray coverage?
Yes. Gray coverage covers all of your gray, and most guests come in every 4 to 8 weeks to keep it fresh. Gray always grows in with a root line, no matter who colors it. What we focus on is making the result look natural and dimensional instead of flat and solid.

What is gray blending?
Gray blending softens your gray into the rest of your color with dimension, so the grow-out is far less noticeable. It is a different service from gray coverage. It suits guests who want fewer appointments, and guests who are ready to grow their gray out after years of permanent color.

Do you offer keratin treatments?
Yes. We offer Keratin Complex NKST treatments for guests who want smoother, more manageable hair with less frizz and less time spent styling. Keratin is especially popular in Jacksonville because of our humidity.
Do you do haircuts?
Yes. Precision and French haircutting are part of what we do, and we plan cut and color together. If a colorist builds brightness down the length of your hair and a separate cutter later removes it, the work is undone. We marry the two, and sometimes the cut comes first.

Do you do color consultations?

What are the salon’s hours?
West Coast Hair Design is open Tuesday through Thursday, 9 am to 8 pm, and Friday and Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm. We are closed Sunday and Monday.
