Fall hair in Jacksonville is a little different.
We don’t suddenly wake up in September, put away the bathing suits and decide everyone needs dark hair. Jacksonville stays warm well into fall, we’re still dodging hurricanes, and our guests are still spending time at the beach, in the pool, on boats and taking cruises. That means the transition from summer to fall tends to be more subtle here.
At West Coast Hair Design here in Mandarin, what we’re seeing for fall 2026 is less about following a list of national trends and more about healthy, shiny hair, richer dimension and small changes that make hair feel new again.
After 31 years of doing hair in Jacksonville, there are also a few things we know about what Florida summers do to hair.
First: The Jacksonville Fall Hair Reset
When I moved to Jacksonville from San Diego and opened West Coast Hair Design in 1995, one of the things that surprised me was the difference in the water.
Between the minerals and chlorine in our local water and everything a Jacksonville summer adds on top of it (sun, swimming pools, salt water, even sunscreen), hair can come into fall feeling dry, dull or simply not behaving the way it normally does. That’s why clarifying treatments have been part of what we do since our first year in business.
A fall reset isn’t the same treatment for everyone. Some hair needs a clarifying treatment to clear mineral and chlorine buildup. Some needs moisture and deep conditioning. Faded color might need a gloss. Often it’s a combination, and we decide based on the condition of the hair, the state of the color, and where the guest wants to go next.
The goal isn’t to erase summer. It’s to get the hair healthy, shiny, and ready for whatever’s next.
Jacksonville Fall Hair Color Is About Richness and Shine, Not Just Going Dark
One of the biggest differences between fall hair trends nationally and what we actually see in our Jacksonville salon is that blonde never really goes out of season here. We have guests who are blonde 12 months a year, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t be.
Almost every guest walking through our doors this fall is asking for the same thing in different words: shine. Glossy, reflective hair that catches the light instead of sitting flat. That’s the real story behind fall color this year, more than any specific shade.
Instead of dramatically darkening hair for fall, we’re seeing subtle changes in tone and dimension. For a blonde, that might mean moving from a cool summer blonde into vanilla, champagne, or a soft, buttery gold, the color guests already picture the second they say the word butter, or vanilla cake mix. Adding warmth doesn’t mean making blonde look brassy. A buttery or champagne blonde adds reflection and richness while still feeling like the cooler blonde you love.
Right now we’re seeing a lot of dimensional blonde alongside blended traditional highlights, highlights that still go all the way to the scalp but with a softer, blended root so the grow-out feels easier to live with.
It’s still blonde. It just has more dimension.
Rich Chocolate Brunette + Caramel Balayage
One of the strongest fall color trends we’re seeing in Jacksonville right now is a rich chocolate brunette with caramel balayage: a deep brown base with warm caramel woven through, the contrast dialed up or down depending on what the guest wants.
But dimensional brunette isn’t one formula. Placement depends on the person wearing it. Some guests want a brighter face frame with a little lighter color painted through the ends. Others want that caramel dimension carried consistently through the whole head.
We’re also seeing the oversized, high-contrast money piece begin to fade. Guests still want brightness around their face, but they want it to connect to the rest of their color instead of standing apart from it. The result feels more balanced.
For brunettes who don’t want balayage at all, warmth can be even more subtle. Adding a touch of red into the right brunette formula can turn an ordinary brown into a rich chocolate, without making the hair look red.
That’s what warming hair up for fall actually means. Not obvious fall colors. The right amount of warmth for the person wearing it.
If you’ve seen the term “candlelit brunette” trending lately, that’s essentially what we’re describing here: a rich base with just enough warmth woven through to catch the light instead of sitting flat. “Toasted almond brunette” is the same idea from the other direction, natural brunettes softening a bright summer balayage into something warmer for fall. Different names, same result we’ve been building at West Coast Hair Design for years: color that reflects light instead of absorbing it.
What About Red Hair for Fall?
Red has quieted down a little in our salon, but fall is when it tends to come back. Jacksonville summers are hard on vibrant red: sun, chlorine, and frequent swimming all fade it fast. As we move into fall, richer reds get more practical again for guests who’ve been thinking about trying one.
If you want warmth without committing to full red, honeycomb copper is worth a look: a warm copper-gold that we can dial bolder or softer depending on how much of a statement you want. It’s a strong bridge color for anyone not ready to leave summer’s warmth behind completely.
Gray Coverage and Gray Blending Don’t Have One Fall Trend
We work with a lot of gray coverage and gray blending here in Jacksonville, and this is one area where we don’t force a seasonal trend. For someone transitioning into gray blending, where she is in that process matters more than the month on the calendar. A guest who already has a beautiful salt-and-pepper result might add a few more lowlights for fall. Someone earlier in the process is often better served by staying consistent with her plan.
Gray coverage gives us even more room to play: painted pieces for subtle dimension, traditional highlights for more contrast, or lowlights for shadow and depth. The goal stays the same either way: color that makes sense for the guest, her hair, and how she wants to maintain it.
The Bangs We’re Seeing Everywhere
If there is one haircut change we’re seeing repeatedly in our Jacksonville salon right now, it’s bangs.
The reference pictures tend to have that Ella Langley feeling: a fuller bang through the center with a slight curtain shape toward the corners.
For someone who has never worn bangs before, we usually recommend starting a little longer, closer to a traditional curtain bang. Live with it first. If you love having hair around your face, we can always take the center shorter. It’s a much easier way to try the look than cutting a short, full bang immediately and discovering that bangs aren’t for you.
The Textured Bob Is Back — But It Should Still Look Good Straight
The other haircut we’re doing more of is a textured bob: blunt around the outside with soft layers underneath, usually falling a half-inch to an inch below the jaw in back. Sometimes we shape it into a slight A-line; other times it stays even all the way around.
The layering is what makes it work. Flat iron it and it should look clean, not choppy. Curl it, add movement, or let your natural texture through, and the layers show up on their own.
We’re also seeing more women work with their natural texture instead of fighting it. A bob is especially good for that. Even when the texture is loose or imperfect, the cut still gives it shape.
In Jacksonville, Your Hair Doesn’t Have to Follow the Calendar
This may be the most important fall trend advice we can give after more than three decades of doing hair in Jacksonville: you don’t have to change your hair because the season changed.
Jacksonville is its own thing. We get seasons, but we get a lot more summer than most of the country. Even in fall, our guests are at Jacksonville Beach, in pools, on boats, and heading out on cruises. Average highs here stay in the 80s well into October, so our hair doesn’t stop dealing with Florida weather just because the calendar says fall.
If you love being blonde, stay blonde. If you want rich chocolate brunette with caramel balayage, fall is a beautiful time to do it. If you’ve been saving pictures of bangs, maybe this is the season to try them.
Trends should give you ideas. They shouldn’t dictate what your hair has to look like.

This is the time of year when the calendar sneaks up on people.
